The Acadmy Museum presents the Film Series Beware the Elements! Natural Disasters on Film

Following a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, extreme wildfires, historic floods, and a truly unprecedented “hurriquake,” we find the perilous realities of climate change increasingly impacting our daily lives. This screening series considers natural disasters through our planet’s primary elements—earth, wind, water, and fire—and seeks to highlight key moments in the history of the disaster film genre as a source of entertainment and portrayal of science, and as a tool to raise our collective consciousness about science-based solutions to the mounting global climate crisis. The Ireichō contains the first comprehensive listing of over 125,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who were incarcerated in the US Army, Department of Justice, Wartime Civil Control Administration, and War Relocation Authority camps. Embedded into the very materiality of the Ireichō are unique ceramic pieces made from soil collected by the project from seventy-five former incarceration sites from Alaska to Hawai‘i, Arkansas to California, and almost every other region of the United States. The Ireizō lists those names online at ireizo.com. Visitors can search for the person’s name by name, birth year, or camp.

Adjacent to John Waters: Pope of Trash, in the Warner Bros. Gallery, the Academy Museum presents Outside the Mainstream, an installation that pays homage to the work of other radically independent filmmakers—such as Kenneth Anger, Shirley Clarke, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Gregg Araki, Todd Haynes, and Rose Troche—who operate beyond the pale of mainstream cinema. The gallery focuses on examples from the American avant-garde, underground film, and New Queer Cinema movements, united by how forward-thinking film journalists including Jonas Mekas and B. Ruby Rich supported their reach.
