The exhibition takes inspiration from the historical network of mid-20th-century bars in cities like New York and Los Angeles, where venues with bird-inspired names covertly signaled safety and solidarity as queer communal spaces at a time when self-expression was a dangerous pursuit.

As a transformative force, its capacity to reproduce images has played a pivotal role in the gradual proliferation of homosocial, homoerotic, and homosexual imagery. Despite periods of severe homophobia, when many queer photographs were suppressed or destroyed, this exhibition brings together a variety of evidence to explore the medium’s profound role in shaping and affirming the vibrant tapestry of the LGBTQ+ community.
