Rubén Esparza’s Untitled (flag) series challenges the symbolic meaning of the American flag and questions the sociopolitical history that has made it recognizable globally. A symbol of the American dream for some, and capitalist imperialism for others, the history of the American flag is fraught and complicated.

Long Beach Museum of Art is honored to exhibit this prolific artist in Long Beach for the first time. Haring’s guiding principle was that art should belong to everyone, which in turn is the driving force of this exhibition. It has appeared in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and the northern cities of Monza and Parma, Italy, offering powerful examples of how Haring fought for change, using art as a platform for activism.

Scattered like stars across the night sky are over 20,000 Pacific Islands in Oceania, with a human history rich in ritual, narrative tradition, innovation, and art. Our mission is to incorporate the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands, with a focus on Micronesia, into a permanent collection, educational programs, rotating exhibits, and living arts.

This exhibit explores Shin’s visual storytelling as a Korean American woman who engages indigeneity as a site of knowledge and creativity. She uses personal archives and figures from Korean shamanism to question the navigational forces that chinoiserie and “the Orient” play in empire, colonization, religion, gender, and love.

Sundays pay what you can

This exhibit is our land acknowledgment practiced in a ceremony between Indigenous artists (Tongva & Pasifika) of the salt water. Humans have the responsibility and obligation to take care of and be part of the whole of nature. “It’s important for people to know that these are not gestural acts but a tradition of Indigenous communities sharing and extending respect, honor, and spirit.” – Cindi Alvitre, Tongva guest curator and artist.

This mural celebrates diasporic communities’ journeys when leaving their homelands to find new places to nest. Muralist Dave Young Kim’s A Momentous Moment in Time of Passage and Landing imagines over 30 birds traveling together in harmonious flight. Each bird pictured here is an official national bird from Asia and the Pacific Islands, representing the diverse communities who now call Southern California home.

The second Sunday of each month – Free

Refashioning presents two project spaces from transdisciplinary artists and fashion designers: Concept Foreign Garments New York (CFGNY) and Wataru Tominaga. Featuring garments, accessories, and textile works, the exhibition examines the ways in which these two practices—one based in New York, the other in Tokyo—challenge preconceived notions of gender and identity and, in particular, what the artists describe as “vaguely Asian” aesthetics.

The room is completely covered with mirrors and lights. As the multitude of lights reflect, they accumulate and expand exponentially. This sense of infinity has been with the artist from the beginning, always looking for more precise ways to express itself. In Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away, Yayoi Kusama’s world is the viewer’s.
