DCA’s Performing Arts Division is delighted to present the Second Annual Lunar New Year Celebration beginning February 3 to March 3, 2024. Launched in 2023, the Lunar New Year Celebration program expands this year to nine events. The festivities include Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese culturally-specific events across the City of Los Angeles. Celebratory performances include cultural dance, food and arts festivals, film screenings, street fairs, parades, story-telling, and spoken-word. We invite you, your family, and friends to participate in these joyous community gatherings.This year’s Lunar New Year events are as follows:

10th Annual Port of Los Angeles Lunar New Year Celebration

Port of Los Angeles, 301 S. Avalon Wilmington, CA 90744 The celebration features cultural entertainment, crafts, petting zoo, and firework finale. Saturday, February 3, 2024 3:00 to 6:30 p.m.

2nd Annual Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival

Vietnamese Association of San Fernando Valley, 7245 Corbin Avenue, Winnetka, CA, 91306The celebration features performers, lion dancers, and free food. Saturday, February 3, 2024 5:00 to 11:00 p.m.

Family Village Celebration

Northridge Park Child Care Resource Center, 10058 Reseda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA, 91325 The celebration includes music and dance performances, children’s activities, and storytelling. Sunday, February 11, 2024 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

125th Annual Golden Dragon Parade

Chinatown Central Plaza, 823 North Hill Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90012 The annual parade showcases floats, festivities, and performers as the parade winds through Chinatown. Saturday, February 17, 2024 1:00 p.m.

Lunar New Year Block Party

On Monday, February 26 at noon, registration opens to the public!

Classes for children, teens, and adults are offered in acrylic, ceramics, piano, meditation and yoga, Tai Chi, and watercolor. Supplies are provided.

This moving, seminal, visual arts project was conceptualized and developed by the Arts Center Director, Rosie Lee Hooks who commissioned 13 artists from the community to use shovels as a canvas to honor the legacy of our ancestors. Each of the world-renowned, master artists who accepted the challenge have a history of building arts institutions in Watts and the greater Los Angeles community.

Stories of Sugar Hill presented by Friends Of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles

Map and guidebook available for download on February 13, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. for FREE!

Stories of Sugar Hill is a seven-stop self-guided Trail map accompanied by  in-depth research that celebrates the influential legends, icons, and trailblazers of West Adams’ Black history.

This project supports the neighborhood’s efforts in collecting, archiving, and sharing the stories of West Adams by working with residents of the area.

The experience is told through the neighborhood’s historic and unique architecture and is led by narrative accounts and reflections of the residents themselves.

 

The accompanying map and research will be accessible for download on February 13, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. on the FORT website.

Participants can log onto the FORT website and download the material for FREE, and take the self-guided tour at their leisure.

The Howard Instrument Collection of the Watts Towers Arts Center is a permanent, revolving installation of musical instruments from around the world. It was assembled by Dr. Joseph H. Howard and donated to the Center in 1989. The collection at the Watts Towers Arts Center, about a quarter of Howard’s total collection, consists of 144 instruments, the majority of which are non- western.
