Social Forest: Oaks of Tovaangar is inspired by Joseph Beuys’s influential work 7000 Oaks. In a multifaceted effort, The Broad will present his art, an offsite public reforestation project, and a series of programs connected with the legacy of Joseph Beuys’s art and environmental advocacy. Social Forest: Oaks of Tovaangar encompasses planting 100 native trees, primarily coast live oaks, in Elysian Park in Los Angeles and additional plantings at Kuruvungna Village Springs in West L.A. This exhibition showcases forty-seven portraits of speakers and students of endangered languages living in the United States. The artist, B.A. Van Sise, collaborated with numerous Indigenous and diasporic cultural organizations, as well as Native Tribes and Nations, to raise awareness about these languages and the ongoing efforts to revitalize them.

A thematic anchor in the exhibition is an 8-foot-by-8-foot watercolor painted by Los Angeles–based artist Sandy Rodriguez. Rodriguez’s YOU ARE HERE / Tovaangar / El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula / Los Angeles is a multilingual map of the greater Los Angeles area, representing the topography, language, flora, fauna, and land stewardship in the region over time and illustrating the movement and histories of peoples who have called—and continue to call—the area home.
