The Acadmy Museum presents the Film Series Beware the Elements! Natural Disasters on Film

Following a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, extreme wildfires, historic floods, and a truly unprecedented “hurriquake,” we find the perilous realities of climate change increasingly impacting our daily lives. This screening series considers natural disasters through our planet’s primary elements—earth, wind, water, and fire—and seeks to highlight key moments in the history of the disaster film genre as a source of entertainment and portrayal of science, and as a tool to raise our collective consciousness about science-based solutions to the mounting global climate crisis. In her first solo museum exhibition in the US, We Are Extraterrestrial, Alice Wang showcases recent prints, glass sculptures, newly commissioned ceramic sculptures, film, and an artist’s book that reflect the artist’s deep curiosity for the space between the real and the imaginary.

The Norton Simon Museum houses a world-renowned collection of South and Southeast Asian art that includes examples of the rich sculptural and painting traditions that developed in this region over more than 2,000 years. Rubén Esparza’s Untitled (flag) series challenges the symbolic meaning of the American flag and questions the sociopolitical history that has made it recognizable globally. A symbol of the American dream for some, and capitalist imperialism for others, the history of the American flag is fraught and complicated.

Long Beach Museum of Art is honored to exhibit this prolific artist in Long Beach for the first time. Haring’s guiding principle was that art should belong to everyone, which in turn is the driving force of this exhibition. It has appeared in New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, and the northern cities of Monza and Parma, Italy, offering powerful examples of how Haring fought for change, using art as a platform for activism.

Scattered like stars across the night sky are over 20,000 Pacific Islands in Oceania, with a human history rich in ritual, narrative tradition, innovation, and art. Our mission is to incorporate the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands, with a focus on Micronesia, into a permanent collection, educational programs, rotating exhibits, and living arts.

This exhibit explores Shin’s visual storytelling as a Korean American woman who engages indigeneity as a site of knowledge and creativity. She uses personal archives and figures from Korean shamanism to question the navigational forces that chinoiserie and “the Orient” play in empire, colonization, religion, gender, and love.

Sundays pay what you can

This exhibit is our land acknowledgment practiced in a ceremony between Indigenous artists (Tongva & Pasifika) of the salt water. Humans have the responsibility and obligation to take care of and be part of the whole of nature. “It’s important for people to know that these are not gestural acts but a tradition of Indigenous communities sharing and extending respect, honor, and spirit.” – Cindi Alvitre, Tongva guest curator and artist.

This mural celebrates diasporic communities’ journeys when leaving their homelands to find new places to nest. Muralist Dave Young Kim’s A Momentous Moment in Time of Passage and Landing imagines over 30 birds traveling together in harmonious flight. Each bird pictured here is an official national bird from Asia and the Pacific Islands, representing the diverse communities who now call Southern California home.
