Description
Adjacent to John Waters: Pope of Trash, in the Warner Bros. Gallery, the Academy Museum presents Outside the Mainstream, an installation that pays homage to the work of other radically independent filmmakers—such as Kenneth Anger, Shirley Clarke, Jack Smith, Andy Warhol, Gregg Araki, Todd Haynes, and Rose Troche—who operate beyond the pale of mainstream cinema. The gallery focuses on examples from the American avant-garde, underground film, and New Queer Cinema movements, united by how forward-thinking film journalists including Jonas Mekas and B. Ruby Rich supported their reach.

There will be a 6-mile stretch of open streets. Jog, ride, bike, skate, run, walk, skateboard, spectate, and enjoy the route however you want. Listen to the calming sounds of water and take in the subdued palette of evergreen shrubbery embracing the Koi Pond. The garden features stone lanterns crafted of Okazaki stone over 200 years ago and a bonsai display maintained by the South Coast Bonsai Association.

Acclaimed author/historian Stuart Timmons was in the process of writing his West Hollywood LGBTQ History Tour, the final in a trio of walking tours, when he suffered a debilitating stroke in 2008. The tour remained incomplete until the City of West Hollywood’s Arts Division funded its completion to help finish his research, bringing it to a rousing completion as both a self-guided walking tour and a special in-person event with performance artists as tour guides. In 2021, through a special grant, the tour was recorded as a collection of short films.
