Poetry With Huizache

Description

Since 2011, Huizache has been at the forefront of Latinx literature and art, its goal be the preeminent magazine of Latinx literature, focusing on innovative prose and poetry. Today, Huizache’s legacy of finding writers who challenge the status quo and reimagine our world continues. Poets participating in the reading are: Audrey Harris Fernández, who has been published in Sunstone, Párafo, and elsewhere; Manuel Paul López’s books include “Nerve Curriculum,” “These Days of Candy,” “The Yearning Feed,” and “Death of a Mexican and Other Poems”; Michael Jaime-Becerra, author of “This Time Tomorrow,” a novel awarded an International Latino Book Award; and Vanessa Diaz, who has been published in The Acentos Review, Dryland Lit, Kweli, and Huizache magazine.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice considers Black image making as a site of protest, contestation, affirmation, and possibility. At CAAM, Fazlalizadeh will present a series of portraits of Black Angelenos wheat-pasted across the atrium’s monumental walls. Based on photographs and conversations that took place this spring while the artist was living in Los Angeles, the portraits ask how safety is inferred, built, and felt for the city’s Black residents.

Shaping Black Modernisms: Art, Culture, and Community In California

Held on the occasion of the exhibition Sargent Claude Johnson  and a new commission Betye Saar: Drifting Toward Twilight, this two-day conference will explore important Black histories across the visual and performing arts.

 

Topics in this conference will address Black artists in the Bay Area, centered around the life and work of Sargent Johnson, and in Southern California, especially the artistic community that developed in nearby Pasadena, as well as California’s key position along the Pacific Rim. With talks by academics and artists, performances of music from the archives by Black composers Harold Bruce Forsythe and William Grant Still, and tours of the exhibitions, this two-day conference will celebrate Black creativity in California’s past, present, and future.
