Stories of Sugar Hill presented by Friends Of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles

Map and guidebook available for download on February 13, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. for FREE!

Stories of Sugar Hill is a seven-stop self-guided Trail map accompanied by  in-depth research that celebrates the influential legends, icons, and trailblazers of West Adams’ Black history.

This project supports the neighborhood’s efforts in collecting, archiving, and sharing the stories of West Adams by working with residents of the area.

The experience is told through the neighborhood’s historic and unique architecture and is led by narrative accounts and reflections of the residents themselves.

 

The accompanying map and research will be accessible for download on February 13, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. on the FORT website.

Participants can log onto the FORT website and download the material for FREE, and take the self-guided tour at their leisure.

Join the City of West Hollywood and Drag Laureate Pickle in celebrating Harvey Milk Day. We will celebrate the political legacy of Harvey Milk, the first openly LGBTQ person to win political office in California, and holding the 2nd annual José Julio Sarria Drag Pageant. Sarria was the first openly gay man to run for office in the United States in 1961 and helped pave the way for Harvey Milk’s successful run for office. José Julio Sarria was also a well-known drag performer under the name Window Norton and founded the International Imperial Court System, one of the oldest and largest LGBT organizations in the world.

Muralist Dave Young Kim’s A Momentous Moment in Time of Passage and Landing imagines over 30 birds traveling together in harmonious flight. Each bird pictured here is an official national bird from Asia and the Pacific Islands, representing the diverse communities who now call Southern California home.
