Description

The Watts Towers Tour Guide Program offers visitors a unique and in-depth look at one of Los Angeles’ most iconic landmarks. Participants will be guided by knowledgeable tour guides through the towers, learning about the history, cultural significance, and artistic processes involved in their creation. The tour, which is the only way to gain access to the towers, will last approximately 30 minutes and highlight the life of Simon Rodia, the Italian immigrant who built the towers over a

33-year period, and the cultural and social context of the Watts neighborhood in which they stand. The tour also includes a visit to the Watts Towers Arts Center, where visitors can see rotating exhibitions of contemporary art and learn about the ongoing preservation efforts for the Towers. With this program, visitors will gain a greater appreciation for the Watts Towers as a masterpiece of folk art and a symbol of resilience and community spirit.

Nature / Nurture is a public, pop-up performance event that intersects a variety of art forms in a natural, outdoor environment that explores how we interact with nature (biology/family history) and nurture (community/surroundings).

The event will feature the sound of ambient music collective Academy of Light as they perform a long-form improvisation in response to their natural surroundings while also channeling their own unique expressions. This sonic landscape will be accompanied by a paper-folding performance by multidisciplinary artist Claire June Apana and a barley tea ceremony hosted by former LA Times Food photo editor Angeline Woo.

 Also Featuring:

Angelique Kalani Axelrode, artist and filmmaker, present her work, KAI HALI’A, dedicated to our kūpuna (“ancestors” in Hawaiian) who live with and through us, a tribute to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Naomi Moser, abstract digital artist and dance theater, and film company Heavy Boots, performances breathwork and spoken word.

Two Performances 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Description
The work of New York-based artist Sanford Biggers (b. 1970, Los Angeles) inaugurates the museum’s outdoor sculpture pedestal at Wilshire Boulevard and Glendon Avenue. Anchoring this corner is Oracle (2021), a cast bronze figure weighing 7.64 US tons (15,280 pounds) and standing at 25 feet tall. This monumental commission from Biggers continues his “Chimera” series that hybridizes the canonical figures and gestures of Greco-Roman sculpture with an assortment of iconic African objects from the 14th–20th centuries.

Sanford Biggers: Oracle is organized by Connie Butler, chief curator, with Ikechukwu Onyewuenyi, curatorial assistant.
