The Acadmy Museum presents the Film Series Beware the Elements! Natural Disasters on Film

Following a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, extreme wildfires, historic floods, and a truly unprecedented “hurriquake,” we find the perilous realities of climate change increasingly impacting our daily lives. This screening series considers natural disasters through our planet’s primary elements—earth, wind, water, and fire—and seeks to highlight key moments in the history of the disaster film genre as a source of entertainment and portrayal of science, and as a tool to raise our collective consciousness about science-based solutions to the mounting global climate crisis. Click the here to see the featured films selected for this series. The film series runs between January 4th to January 28, 2024.

Description
For over 35 years, the merchants on Olvera Street have celebrated Dia de los Muertos. The celebration has evolved to incorporate the pre-Columbian, Aztec, Mayan, and Catholic rituals surrounding death. A vibrant and colorful procession sets the stage for our ceremony each night.

Dia de los Muertos is, in fact, a celebration of life – it is not a time to mourn our loved ones; rather, it is a time to remember the lives they led and the many things they enjoyed during that life. Death is a part of life, and so we honor it. Dia de los Muertos at Olvera Street is the only celebration in Los Angeles – A nine (9) day festival with a nightly procession, community altars on display, and entertainment.

You are invited to join Lincoln Heights Youth Arts Center’s HALLOWEEN FRIGHT NIGHT 2024 for fun, games, and storytelling! On Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 5:00 to 10:30 p.m. everyone is invited to celebrate the Halloween festivities with a costume contest, a spooky sports corner, candy, food, music, games/activities, and a haunted house!

Learn about “The Haunting on Altura Street,” a dark tale of the De Losa Family, whose lives were mysteriously cut short in their new home. The town of Lincoln Heights closed the doors to the house after the tragic discovery, ensuring no one would enter that house again… that is, until now. Roam the halls of the haunted house and experience the true story, if you dare!

Haunted House is recommended for ages 13+.
