In an afternoon organized by the Asian American Pacific Islander Arts Network, ARTNOIR, and The Here And There Collective, artists, art historians, and curators discuss the ways that their identity shapes their lives and creative practices. Panelists address how artists of various diasporas navigate existing systems and band together for cultural code switching, when excluded from the art market.

We invite you to join curators Nancy Meyer and John Weston in conversation with artists from Step & Repeat as they moderate a group discussion. Inspired by the historical Pattern and Decoration movement of the mid 1970s through 1980s and its impact across our region, Step & Repeat brings together 46 Southern California artists whose artwork engages with and builds on similar themes.

This conversation is free and open to the public and will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 10, 2025,  12: 00 (noon) to 1:00 p.m., at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG).

On Sunday, May 4, 2025, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., join the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) for a community gathering where participants are invited to reflect on what is flourishing in their lives through a collective walk along a labyrinth installation inspired by Danila Cervantes’ spiraling animations and cycles of life and death explored in their work. The experience culminates in an art-making activity where folks will craft personal illustrations on traditional amate paper using a variety of materials to express what they hope to nurture and celebrate in their lives. We hope this experience will leave you with seeds of inspiration and appreciation for what is already present and blooming in your life.

Taking controversial topics in all of their complexity, humor, and provocation, while raising important questions about the social power of art. Exhibition includes prints by Oliver W. Harrington. The exhibition is curated by Rosie Lee Hooks.
