A multiple Grammy-winning legend in worlds of funk and avant-garde jazz, Victor Wooten is a regular in music critics’ lists of best bass guitar players in history. In recent years, Wooten has sought to combine jazz and symphonic traditions, and La Lección Tres showcases the possibilities of a solo electric bass with orchestra, sometimes with plucked rhythmic punch and others lyrical and melodic with a custom bass that’s bowed like a cello. After opening with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s romantic and lush Ballade, Thomas Wilkins conducts Bernstein’s timeless Symphonic D.

Highway 1, USA: First up is an uplifting film by trailblazer William Grant Still, hailed as “the Dean of African American Composers.” Norman Garrett and Nicole Heaston star as a hardworking Black couple determined to build a better life, whose years of sacrifice are misguided.

 

The Dwarf: Next up is a Gothic tale of one-sided love in a decadent Spanish court. Tenor Rodrick Dixon stars in the title role opposite audience favorites Erica Petrocelli and Kristinn Sigmundsson in Alexander Zemlinsky’s The Dwarf. Last staged at LA Opera in 2008 to critical acclaim, Oscar Wilde’s fable is brought to life through a lush and romantic score.

It’s live and in concert. Donner’s beloved film adaptation relays the inspiring origins of Superman, from his narrow escape as an infant from the doomed planet Krypton to his formative years on a farm in Smallville, Kansas, and finally to his arrival in Metropolis, where he leads dual lives as mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent and as the mythical “Man of Steel.” Wilkins and the LA Phil perform the score live-to-picture while the film plays in high definition on the big screen.

Maria José Llergo is one of the most exciting voices in contemporary flamenco. Her unique interpretation of the genre is refreshing and free of traditional constraints. Singing about love, sadness, and social struggles, her stunning voice twists and turns through atmospheric and captivating soundscapes.  Her first album, Sanación, was included on NPR’s list of their favorite albums of 2020.
