Forged from the land, contemporary ceramics reflect an intimate working relationship with the environment and centuries of artistic tradition. GROUNDED: Contemporary Ceramics features significant examples of contemporary Native ceramics.

A waterway is a river, canal, or ocean passage that serves as a route of travel or transport, like veins or highways. Waterways are sacred lifelines, essential for survival, and what connects us all. The Waterways exhibition will focus on the ongoing and interdependent relationships between California’s people and natural environments. It will highlight cultural history, traditional ecological knowledge, and contemporary practices to address environmental problems facing Californians today.

This exhibition features highlights from Autry’s Southwest textile collection, which includes over 2,000 Diné and Pueblo weavings, both historic and contemporary. It was co-curated by master weaver and textile artist Melissa S. Cody, a fourth-generation Navajo weaver who uses a traditional loom to overlay historic geometric patterns with contemporary references drawn from pop culture, Op Art, and techno aesthetics.

This installation features the many forms incarceration has taken in the American West over time, in conversation with a new photo series taken in a California state prison by fine art photographer Pep Williams. Located in the jail cell area of the Autry’s firearms galleries, the installation brings past and present into dialogue.

In Stirs Up the Dust, Wendy Red Star creates a series of celestial couture garments titled Thunder Up Above. Red Star reimagines the regalia associated with Pow Wow in futuristic terms. Performed within a Martian landscape, Red Star’s regalia projects the wearer into the future, bringing her high-style, cosmic Pow Wow to outer space and worlds beyond.

In 1680, the Pueblo Revolt began. Led by Po’pay, the members of this historic uprising were successful in expelling the colonizers from their homelands, and for twelve years after freeing themselves, the Pueblos of New Mexico lived free from Castilian rule and influence. In 1692, the Spanish returned with a vengeance and stole the lands again. In ReVOlt 1680/2180, a contemporary retelling of this history by visionary Cochiti Pueblo artist Virgil Ortiz, the 1680 rebels will have more resources and aid, and their territories will be secure once and for all.  Adults — $18, Students and Seniors — $14, Children (3–12) — $8, Free hours Tuesday and Wednesday from 1—4 p.m. Advanced registration is required for free days.

Focusing on four key California stories – Salmon, Fire, Desert, and Waterways – Human Nature reveals how traditional ecological knowledge can help current residents understand and care for the environment. Vividly illustrated with Native American objects and contemporary artworks, photography, soundscapes, and multimedia displays, the exhibition investigates how culture and ecology merge in the California landscape.

PST ART will be hosting PST ART + Science Family Festival at the La Brea Tar Pits. As part of the PST ART: Art and Science Collide, DCA’s Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery features Beatriz da Costa: (un)disciplinary tactics, presented by Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions LACE, now through January 5, 2025.

Curated by LACE’s former Chief Curator/Director of Programs Daniela Lieja Quintanar with Ana Briz, the project weaves together an exhibition, public programming, performances, educational workshops, and study groups as an evocation of the late Beatriz da Costa’s (1974–2012) approach to the intersections of ancient and non-academic forms of knowledge.

 

PST ART + Science Family Festival is part of PST Art: Art & Science Collide, presented by Getty, hosted by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County at La Brea Tar Pits, and produced by the Edinburgh Science Festival.

 

Port Traits pays tribute to the work of late AGCC Studio Artists Scott Brown and Slobodan Dimitrov. The exhibition features a selection of paintings by Brown and his alias, Butcher John Henry (a collaboration with artist Logan Fox), in addition to black and white film photographs by Dimitrov. With over 25 years of history at the Center, Scott Brown and Slobodan Dimitrov will be remembered for their impact on the San Pedro community.

Scott Brown was a painter, photographer, and storyteller who grew up in Southern California. Scott was an active member of the South Bay arts community, participating regularly in the First Thursday art walk in Downtown San Pedro and other events around San Pedro and Palos Verdes. Brown’s colorful and uniquely stylized paintings captured the people and places in his life around San Pedro and beyond. Paintings by Scott Brown and his collaborative alias, Butcher John Henry, will be on view in Port Traits.

Slobodan Dimitrov was the unofficial photographer of the labor movement in the LA area for the past thirty years, a crucial period in its history. He was born in former Yugoslavia (present-day Serbia) and spent several years in France as a child before emigrating to Los Angeles. He became an AGCC Studio Artist in 1984, and he has spent much of his career documenting the labor movement in addition to San Pedro’s history and local artists. Port Traits will feature several bodies work by Dimitrov from his black and white film photography practice.

Port Traits will be on view in the AGCC galleries March 9th – April 6th, 2024, with open gallery hours Thursdays – Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. The exhibition will open with a free public reception on Saturday, March 9th from 3-5pm.

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) emerged from a group of San Pedro artists in the 1970s that created art studios and exhibition space within the WWII era army barracks of Angels Gate Park near the Port of Los Angeles. Today, AGCC hosts over 50 artist studios in addition to a variety of programs to engage the diverse communities of the Los Angeles Harbor region, including arts education in local schools, community classes, cultural events, and exhibitions of contemporary art. Every Saturday, the Market features a dozen local farmers and over two dozen food and artisan vendors who bring a diverse selection of local produce, spices, sprouts, breads, nuts, baked goods, and fresh flowers each week.
