Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a citywide commemoration of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage and history in Los Angeles. The celebration will acknowledge the contributions of Southern California’s Asian and Pacific Islander communities in education, religion, the arts, culture, and the humanities.  East West Players’ Theatre for Youth Touring Production presents the the story of  Kailani, an 18-year-old senior and star athlete, at Maui High School. While anxiously waiting to find out if she’s been accepted into her dream school, Patsy Mink, the first Asian-American congresswoman and former valedictorian of Maui High school, appears before her. As Patsy walks Kailani through the many trials and tribulations she faced throughout her political career and life, Kailani realizes that no matter how many setbacks she encounters, she can succeed as long as she perseveres. Good for ages 11 years old and up.

  • The classes are free and open to all ages, including leashed pets!

 

From March to August, park goers can try something new through the Wild Card series, exploring various exercise modalities to learn something new, from Zumba to Tai Chi.

Prior to the colonization of Southern California in the 18th century, Native communities throughout the region deployed controlled fire regimes to ensure the well-being of their local ecosystems. Fire Kinship counters attitudes of fear and illegality around fire, arguing for a return to Native practices in which fire is regarded as a vital aspect of land stewardship, community well-being, and tribal sovereignty. Stockholm-based artist Lap-See Lam presents “Tales of the Altersea” (2023), an immersive video installation inspired by the ruins of a dragon-shaped ship visible from her art school studio. The ship, which sailed from Shanghai to Gothenburg in 1990 intending to serve Chinese cuisine to European patrons, was eventually abandoned. Lam’s work explores themes of loss, memory, and resilience, utilizing the vessel’s history as a narrative foundation.
