James Tadanao Sata created some of the most adventurous photographs made in America in the 1920s and ’30s. Abstract spheres and triangles, complex arrangements of figures and shadows, and spaces rich with deep and delicate tones emphasized geometric forms and conveyed newness, modernity, and irony. This exhibition comprises sixty photographs by Sata, photographs of Sata’s concentration camp paintings and drawings, and family artifacts from the camp.

This exhibition features, two artists, the paintings of Hyesook Park and sculptures of Sung Il Kim. The show features a vibrant selection of the two artists’ works that illustrate individual explorations of the human body, soul, and spirituality, and the interconnectedness of life. Leveraging the unique visual cultures of the Korean diaspora, the artists’ works highlight the multifaceted nature of experience and culture.

This session will give an overview of Chinese genealogy books (also known as zupu or jiapu): what they are, how they can be used in your Chinese family history research, and how to search for yours inside the My China Roots database. Using samples from the database, Clotilde Yap will present the main sections of a typical zupu, how to locate your ancestor’s name, and how to extract your lineage from a zupu. Take a journey through Dunhuang, an ancient oasis connecting peoples and cultures, where the sights and sounds come to life through stories, music, tactile objects, an interactive discovery map, an intergenerational reading area, and highlights from the museum’s collection. With enhanced accessibility and innovative design features, Crossroads aims to inspire curiosity, build empathy, and catalyze connections.

The exhibition brings together artists Michael Massenburg, Aiseborn, and Mr. B Baby to explore the intersections of family,
culture, and community. Curated by Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, PhD., the works will be on view Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., from April 13 to August 2024, with a reception/artist talk and performance by Nedra Wheeler Trio taking place Sunday, June 9 at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Arroyo Art Collective presents What Do You See – What Do You Hear, a collaboration of dance and musical instrument, set within the Audubon Center at Debs Park compound. Over the course of four days and 16 performances, musicians are asked to interpret their dance partner, while dancers respond and contribute to the music so that each elevates the other’s art.

This improvisational and alternating dance and music performances accompanied by workshops open to the general public. All events are family friendly and free. April 28th, May 11th, May 18th, and May 19th.

There is free parking available in the Audubon Center lot onsite, however spots fill up quickly. If the lot is full, please park along Griffin Ave. and walk up to the Center.

Mark Bradford’s 150 Portrait Tone, a mural-size composition that contains elements of both abstraction and realism, is based on an idea for a work that the artist conceived after the fatal shooting of Philando Castile by a police officer in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in July 2016. Castile, a nutrition services supervisor at an elementary school, was shot after being pulled over in his car—an incident that was livestreamed on Facebook by Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, who was sitting in the passenger seat next to him.

The painting features excerpts of Reynolds’s dialogue from the video. The title, 150 Portrait Tone, refers to the name and color code of the pink acrylic used throughout the painting. Like the now-obsolete “flesh” crayon in the Crayola 64 box (renamed “peach” in 1962), the color “portrait tone” carries inherent assumptions about who, exactly, is being depicted. In the context of Bradford’s painting, the title presents a sobering commentary on power and representation.
