Stories of Sugar Hill is a seven-stop self-guided Trail map accompanied by  in-depth research that celebrates the influential legends, icons, and trailblazers of West Adams’ Black history.

This project supports the neighborhood’s efforts in collecting, archiving, and sharing the stories of West Adams by working with residents of the area.

The experience is told through the neighborhood’s historic and unique architecture and is led by narrative accounts and reflections of the residents themselves.

The accompanying map and research will be accessible for download on February 13, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. on the FORT website.

Participants can log onto the FORT website and download the material for FREE, and take the self-guided tour at their leisure.

Nature / Nurture is a public, pop-up performance event that intersects a variety of art forms in a natural, outdoor environment that explores how we interact with nature (biology/family history) and nurture (community/surroundings).

The event will feature the sound of ambient music collective Academy of Light as they perform a long-form improvisation in response to their natural surroundings while also channeling their own unique expressions. This sonic landscape will be accompanied by a paper-folding performance by multidisciplinary artist Claire June Apana and a barley tea ceremony hosted by former LA Times Food photo editor Angeline Woo.

 Also Featuring:

Angelique Kalani Axelrode, artist and filmmaker, present her work, KAI HALI’A, dedicated to our kūpuna (“ancestors” in Hawaiian) who live with and through us, a tribute to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Naomi Moser, abstract digital artist and dance theater, and film company Heavy Boots, performances breathwork and spoken word.

Two Performances 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

In a vacant lot next to his studio where a house had burned down, artist David Horvitz and landscape architects TERREMOTO began designing a garden. Hosting exhibitions, performance, readings, gatherings, and more, David calls it “… a garden of additions, of stories, Memories,  Futures. The flotsam and jetsam of all things. A design always in progress and un-designing itself.”

All are welcome to join us for a day of gardening with David, Terremoto, Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodriguez, and Active Cultures. We will dig a hole and look for clay in the soil.
